DBT–BIRAC Launch 21 High-Performance Biomanufacturing Platforms

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Ministry of Science and Technology MoST

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), in collaboration with the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), has launched a network of 21 high-performance biomanufacturing platforms under the BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Environment, Economy and Employment). These platforms include advanced biofoundries and biomanufacturing hubs to support synthetic biology, smart proteins, mRNA medicines, carbon-capture solutions, and other frontier areas.

The initiative seeks to expand India’s bioeconomy from about USD 10 billion toward a projected USD 300 billion by 2047. By providing shared infrastructure and cutting-edge tools, the platforms are expected to drive innovation, import substitution, entrepreneurship, and skilled job creation. They mark a strategic step in positioning India as a global biomanufacturing hub.

Relevant question for policy stakeholders: How can public–private partnerships and targeted funding mechanisms be leveraged to ensure these BioEnabler hubs transition successfully from pilot-scale facilities to commercially sustainable biomanufacturing centers?
