Development of Flexible, Safe, and Eco-Friendly Aluminum-Ion Battery by Indian Scientists

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Ministry of Science and Technology MoST

Scientists from Bengaluru’s Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences and the Indian Institute of Science have developed a novel flexible aluminum-ion battery that offers a safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries commonly used in electronics and electric vehicles. The battery is made using abundant aluminum and a water-based solution, making it environmentally friendly and less prone to hazards like overheating and explosion.

The battery maintains 96.77% of its capacity after 150 charge-discharge cycles and remains functional even when bent or folded, demonstrating potential applications in flexible electronics and wearable devices. Advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques ensured optimized battery performance and durability.
