DST-autonomous Scientists Find Way to Improve Biosensors Using Gold at Tiny Scales

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being | SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Ministry of Science and Technology MoST

Researchers in gold nanoscale assembly - from S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (an autonomous institution of the Department of Science & Technology (DST)) - have discovered that controlling interparticle forces (“a tug of war”) can significantly improve the sensitivity and performance of biosensors. By manipulating how gold nanoparticles assemble at the nanoscale, it is possible to enhance detection limits for biological agents, potentially benefiting medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. The insight offers a pathway for DST to support R&D funding in nanomaterials and sensor technologies.

Advancements in nanoscale biosensor technology can strengthen public health response capacity (e.g. for disease detection), environmental safety, and quality assurance. Supporting translation of such research through grants, industry partnerships, and regulatory frameworks will be crucial.
