In response to multiple questions in the Lok Sabha, the Government outlined how Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Space (DoS) are leveraging space-based systems to advance national development goals, strengthen flagship schemes, scale up private participation, and prepare for India’s own space station under Space Vision 2047.
Key Applications of Space Technology (2025)
Agriculture: Satellite-based crop mapping, yield estimation, and insurance-unit assessments supporting PMFBY; jute, rice, wheat, soybean and cotton monitoring across multiple states.
Disaster Management: Flood early warnings (Brahmaputra, Godavari, Tapi), glacial lake monitoring, landslide alerts, AI-based lightning nowcasting, and emergency response integration (NDEM).
Climate & Environment: Monitoring NO₂, CO₂, greenhouse gases, land-use change, Essential Climate Variables, and air quality via GeoAI.
Societal Welfare: Geospatial monitoring of MGNREGA, PMAY, PMGSY, PMKSY, water bodies, wetlands, and reservoirs.
Global Leadership & Data Access
India led the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’ (Apr–Sep 2025): 39 activations, 4 new users onboarded.
Open access to EO data (>5 m GSD) under the Indian Space Policy 2023 via portals like MOSDAC, VEDAS, and Bhuvan.
Startups & Private Sector Boom
Space startups grew from 1 (2014) to 400+; USD 500+ million invested.
Enablers include IN-SPACe Seed Fund, ₹1000 cr VC Fund, ₹500 cr Technology Adoption Fund, SSLV tech transfer, and EO constellation (PPP).
Human Spaceflight Milestone
Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) approved: BAS-01 by 2028, five-module design; enhanced Gaganyaan outlay ₹20,193 crore.
Policy Relevance
Space-based platforms are now embedded in governance, improving targeting, transparency, disaster resilience, and climate reporting. Open data and startup-friendly policies are accelerating innovation while reducing dependence on foreign systems.
Economic: Boosts agri-insurance efficiency, infrastructure planning, and private investment
Security & Resilience: Faster disaster response, maritime and border situational awareness
Innovation: Positions India as a global EO and launch services hub
Science & Diplomacy: BAS strengthens long-term human spaceflight capability and soft power
Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders: How can India further integrate open satellite data with state-level decision systems to ensure last-mile delivery of climate resilience and welfare benefits?
