MoSPI Invites Feedback on Draft National Industrial Classification (NIC) – 2025

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation MoSPI | Ministry of Commerce and Industry MoCI

The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the draft National Industrial Classification (NIC)–2025 for public feedback. This marks a major overhaul over the 2008 framework, aligning with International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 5 (UN) and expanding sub-class granularity from 1,304 to approximately 1,900 categories. The update is designed to accommodate emerging sectors, such as renewable energy, fintech, e-commerce, AYUSH healthcare, digital economy and intermediation services and capture the evolving structure of India’s economy. MoSPI invites comments from government agencies, industry, academia, and the public by 20 September 2025 via email or an online form.

Relevant question for policy stakeholders:
How can the final NIC-2025 be structured to support real-time economic tracking, facilitate SME registration and policy targeting in new sectors, and enhance data-driven decision-making across central and state governance?
