On 26 September 2025, MoSPI, India’s nodal agency for official statistics and monitoring of infrastructure projects, unveiled a set of digital initiatives unveiled a set of new digital initiatives during the 29th Conference of Central and State Statistical Organizations (CoCSSO). The launches include:

  • PAIMANA Portal (Project Assessment Infrastructure Monitoring and Analytics): New platform for tracking large public infrastructure projects above ₹150 crore, across roads, railways, petroleum, and urban development. It replaces the older portal OCMS and aims to improve transparency and monitoring.

  • NMDS Portal (National Metadata Structure): A centralized repository that standardizes statistical metadata across agencies, ensuring uniformity, version control, and interoperability in India’s official statistics. It also serves as advisory framework to improve statistical quality.

  • MoSPI Website 2.0: Redesigned with an AI-based multilingual chatbot, cloud-first architecture, and compliance with MeitY’s DBIM standards.

  • GoI Stats App (iOS version): Expands access to official statistics for iPhone and iPad users, beyond the earlier Android-only version.

  • AI/ML Pilots: Applications in data collection, processing, and dissemination, developed by MoSPI’s Data Innovation Lab.

These initiatives mark a shift toward a digitally integrated statistical system, improving transparency, timeliness, and reliability of official data. Standardized metadata and AI-enabled processes reduce discrepancies between central and state datasets, while tools like PAIMANA enhance oversight of large public infrastructure projects. Together, they will strengthen India’s move toward evidence-based policymaking, align with Digital India and emerging data governance frameworks.

Relevant Question for Policy Stakeholders:
How can states with weaker statistical capacity be supported to adopt PAIMANA, NMDS, and AI-based systems uniformly, ensuring interoperability and preventing data silos?
