Ministry of Culture MoCul | Government of Sikkim

The Northeast India Heritage Festival (NEIHF), held in Columbus, Ohio from September 19-20, 2025, showcased Northeast India’s diversity under the theme CARE - Connect, Assimilate, Research, Empower. Sikkim took a prominent role, presenting its strategy of modernisation aligned with environmental preservation. Ms. Mamta Somani, hailing from Sikkim, represented the state as a panelist, offering insights into its progressive policies and people-driven initiatives. She spoke about organic farming, smoke-free public spaces, plastic-free living, improved sanitation, parks and recreation, and recognition under Swachh Bharat for cleanliness. Attendees and diaspora showed strong interest in adopting similar practices in other northeastern states.

This event illustrates Sikkim’s soft-power usage through cultural diplomacy to attract interest in its sustainable development model. It offers a platform for sharing best practices that can inform environmental regulation, urban planning, and tourism policy in similar ecologically sensitive regions. The visibility can also boost tourism and investment aligned with green and heritage sectors.
