ITU on Sustainable Space: Constellation Growth Requires International Rules

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure | SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Ministry of External Affairs MEA | Ministry of Communications MoC

As low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations continue to expand rapidly, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) warns that existing governance mechanisms are insufficient to ensure long-term space sustainability. With orbital congestion, spectrum interference, and space debris risks mounting, the ITU calls for updated, binding international rules and best practices on frequency management, constellation registration, and orbital coordination to preserve connectivity and protect the orbital commons.

Relevant question for policy stakeholders:
How can India contribute proactively to shaping international space governance standards through multilateral forums and its own telecom diplomacy. while preparing domestic regulatory frameworks for responsible satellite deployment and orbital resource stewardship?
