UN Women & India AI Mission: Compendium on AI and Gender Empowerment

SDG 5: Gender Equality | SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being | SDG 4: Quality Education | SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology MeitY | Ministry of Women and Child Development MoWCD

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 compendium Real-World Impact of AI and Gender Empowerment presents a strategic blueprint for utilising Artificial Intelligence to bridge gender divides, featuring 23 high-impact case studies across health, safety, and finance. Developed by the IndiaAI Mission in partnership with UN Women, the compendium advocates for the "Democratisation of AI," ensuring women are central as creators and consumers rather than passive subjects.

The report highlights the "Technical Fidelity" of gender-responsive AI — systems designed by default to mitigate bias and protect privacy — demonstrating how automated tools can structure judicial data for domestic violence survivors or provide localised agricultural advice to women farmers. By embedding "Privacy-by-Design" and ethical safeguards, these interventions offer a replicable model for inclusive development across the Global South.

Key Pillars of the AI and Gender Empowerment Framework

  • Safety & Safeguarding Mechanics: Utilizing AI tools like NariRaksha and VoiceValor for real-time monitoring of public spaces and survivor-led auditing of online moderation to prevent gender-based violence.

  • Inclusive Credit Scoring: Implementing gender-bias audited algorithms to improve financial access for women with informal income profiles, removing the "Strategic Barrier" to retail lending.

  • Privacy-Preserving Health Triage: Deploying technologies like Thermalytix for non-invasive, privacy-centric breast cancer screening and Project Saathi for gender-responsive health triage.

  • Mentorship & STEM Skilling: Leveraging AI-based mentorship platforms like AtenIA to reduce gender gaps in education-to-work transitions and green careers.

  • Localized Agricultural Intelligence: Providing women farmers with hyperlocal, voice-based advice via FarmerChat to address disparities in information access.

  • Judicial Data Structuring: Using AI tools like AymurAI to structure gender-based violence data, ensuring transparency and accountability in the legal system.

What is "Gender-Responsive AI"? Gender-responsive AI refers to AI systems that are designed with an explicit awareness of gender dynamics and potential biases. It provides the "Technical Fidelity" needed to ensure that algorithms do not perpetuate existing social inequalities. This involves a mechanical process of participatory bias mitigation and community co-design, which acts as a functional prerequisite for "Implementation Fidelity" in national empowerment programs like the IndiaAI Mission.

Policy Relevance: India’s AI-Led Equity Strategy

  • Operationalizing Ethical Safeguards: The compendium acts as a primary mechanic for MeitY to internalize "Privacy-by-Design" across public service AI applications, ensuring that gender-sensitive data is protected during large-scale deployments.

  • Internalizing Financial Inclusion: By adopting audited credit scoring models, the Ministry of Finance can bypass traditional collateral requirements that often exclude women, providing a mechanical solution for expanding the micro-credit ecosystem.

  • Bypassing Health Access Barriers: The focus on non-invasive screening (Thermalytix) serves as a "Strategic Barrier Removal" for women in conservative or rural settings, improving early detection rates for critical health issues.

  • Mechanical Link to Green Careers: Aligning AI skilling with green jobs ensures that women are not left behind in the "Just Transition," providing the technical proficiency required for future-ready employment.
