The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has released outcome results from its Inclusive Insurance Innovation Programme, describing it as the world’s largest insurance innovation effort to date. The initiative — supported by BMZ, Generali Group, and the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) Foundation — operates in 30 countries and aims to close the global protection gap, estimated at US $ 1.8 trillion in 2023.

The report highlights that over 250,000 beneficiaries have already been reached, with more than 40 inclusive insurance solutions launched or under development. These include index-based crop insurance for farmers in Viet Nam, health-coverage for gig-workers in Tanzania, and wildlife-protection insurance in Argentina. The programme’s cumulative US $ 2.8 million in catalytic financing has mobilised partnerships across 100 public-private entities, showcasing scalable models for financial inclusion and risk resilience in developing economies.

For India, where insurance penetration remains below 4 % of GDP, the results demonstrate how inclusive insurance frameworks can complement welfare and climate-adaptation policy. They offer replicable blueprints for protecting informal-sector workers, farmers, and MSMEs under schemes aligned with the IRDAI “Insurance for All by 2047” roadmap and Mission LiFE. The findings also underline the growing importance of climate-risk insurance in achieving resilient development.

What is Inclusive Insurance Innovation? → It refers to the design of affordable, accessible insurance solutions tailored for low-income groups and small enterprises — often supported by blended public-private financing and digital delivery models.
